Earth-Day-2014

Earth Day  2014.

For me, taking care of the planet that my kids live in is of utmost importance. After all, we all share this world. My family and I try to live eco-friendly lives by making small changes and decisions DAILY. It’s vital to teach our children not only the beauty of the world but, ways to maintain that beauty for generations to come. Here are some tips to get you started on Earth Day 2014!

Tips-WI

  1. Get A Reusable Bottle: Get a glass or steel bottle and say good-bye to plastic. You’ll be reducing waste in no time.
  2. Buy Local: Support your community and buy local. The less any produce is on the road to get to you, the less icky chemicals you will find on them.
  3. Donate, Don’t Dump It: Go through you home and donate things you no longer need, someone will re-love your old treasures. You can also help your community by donating to Goodwill.
  4. Don’t Be a Litter Bug: Don’t litter, just don’t. Have garbage? Put it in your pocket or purse until you can reach a garbage disposal. Out for a walk? Pick up that litter and help the planet.
  5. Light Bulb! Switch all of your light bulbs in your home with CFL’s. You can get coupons for these right now from the Ontario government and they are worth the investment.

Documentary-Netflix

Learn to Make a Difference.

I am a Netflix documentary addict, I have seen almost every single one of these documentaries and I’ve had the kids watch with me too. We are wide-eyed and blown away with some of the truths that we’ve discovered. Here’s a list you can watch today for Earth Day or continue watching this whole month.  Chasing Ice was extraordinarily beautiful yet, sad in the most deepest of ways. You must watch it, The Hole Story was remarkable and hard to believe it is actually true!

  1. The Blue Planet: A Natural History of the Oceans
  2. Moving Art: Oceans
  3. A Sea Change
  4. Chasing Ice
  5. Queen of the Sun: What Are the Bees Telling Us?
  6. Addicted to Plastic
  7. David Attenborough: Wildlife Specials
  8. The Hole Story

Get the Kids Involved!

Mimi loves to learn new things and it’s even easier when they can learn while having fun. The Bubble Guppies is one of her favorite shows and she has learned so much. Curious George is another great one, along with Dinosaur Train. And who doesn’t love Sesame Street? Education and interactive!

  1. Curious George: Mulch Ado About Nothing / Gets a Trophy
  2. Go Diego Go: Rescue of Red-Eyed Tree Frogs
  3. Bubble Guppies: Boy Meets Squirrel
  4. Dinosaur Train: Stargazing on the Night Train / Get Into Nature
  5. Sesame Street: The Camouflage Challenge
  6. Wild Animal Baby Explorers: Beaks and Bills / The Mighty Oak Tree

Get Educated.

I am very meticulous and adamant on what goes on my kids’ plates, while they do indulge like most kids, I make sure to give them the best that I can provide. They often question why they have to have homemade or organic fruit snacks and not Gushers like their friends or why they can’t have sugary cereals for breakfast.

  1. Vegucated
  2. Farmageddon
  3. Food, Inc.

I love these documentaries that kind of shows them the harsh truth behind the way our food is made. While we monitor and censor what needs to be censored, we don’t censor the message. We’ve watched all 3 of these and they were surprised at what they learned.

I am a self-proclaimed Netflix addict and I will bundle and cuddle up on the couch and watch a documentary any day! Being green is something that doesn’t have to be all or nothing. You can take small steps every single day to make a difference, I am a firm believer that any change is good change.

What titles are you looking forward to watching?

Let me know, til then–cheers m’deres!
